Your Email List – 5 Reasons Yours Sucks!

Maximizing your list to its full potential is one aspect that a lot of internet marketers lack.  Plain and simple, they understand the concept of giving something away for free, writing a 15-30 pages eBook sprinkled with their affiliate products, and sending out a series of emails.

Now that is email marketing 101.  Below are some of the most common mistakes I see people are doing to really make their email campaigns a huge waste of time:

Attention Grabbing -  The subject is the most important part.  Why?  Because, you want people to actually open up your email and see what you have to say.  Now, don’t go over the top about this and do some searching around the net to see some of the best attention grabbing emails you can send.  Make sure your first copies are excellent so you put a good taste in their mouth.

Sending messages – Ok if you send a message every day, every 12 hours, or bombard the living crap out of their email address you’re going to piss people off.  Most likely they will lose interest in your emails and deem you as a self promoter just trying to make a quick buck.

Engagement - There has to be some type of engagement with your email list.  Whether it be asking for one good thing they liked on your eBook and 2 things they disliked on your eBook.  Simply, state that you’re trying to make your eBook something people truly admire.  Also, offer an incentive for their feedback :) Building an email list

Self Promotion – If ever email starts with, “for a limited time you can buy this at half the price”.  You’re are going to fail miserably.  Ever heard of the boy who cried wolf?  This is what you’re doing.  Not only are you looking like a complete ass you’re coming off as a salesman.

Tracking -  This is one that just kills me.  You have to track your emails whether or not you want to.  Aweber makes it easy and you can use bit.ly or some other link tracking tool that will show you what people are clicking on.  If no one is clicking or even opening the messages you need to think about why.

Yes, it’s true the money is in the list and it’s a numbers game.  Adjusting your email list to be the most effective is vital otherwise you should just abandon your Aweber account if you’re not going to use it correctly.

One quick way to fail in WordPress and blogging is trying to learn the hard way - by searching for free videos and tips. That's like trying to complete a HUGE jiggsaw puzzle, for which the pieces always don't fit.

There's a better solution though...

I think you have spelled all the mistakes marketers make. I think self promotion is the worst thing one can do. Something like this is best avoided. Also a level of trust must be gained with your subscribers. Another point, sending out too many emails will make your subscribers immune to your emails since no on will want to open it after a while.

    Hey Enstine,

You know when I was first getting started I didn’t know how to do any of what you’re sharing here. I mean coming up with attention grabbing headlines and then keeping my readers wanting to come back for more. I had no idea how to do that. It can be a scary thing to be honest with you.

Over time I have learned more about how to have success in these areas. You definitely have to have something your readers want in order to even get them on your list but you have to treat them like your friends. People you know or want to build a friendship with.

Don’t bombard them with what you offer all the darn time or they will not only run for the hills but unsubscribe in a heartbeat never to return ever again.

I hope that others will learn from what you’re sharing here because it really can be helpful for those who were where I was when I started no knowing one darn thing.

Enjoy your week Enstine and thanks for driving home a very important subject.

    • Adrienne, you have a way you do your things that keeps people hanging on. I’ve signed up to your list some months back and have never even checked if you have an unsubscription link. Your content and timing is such that no one would want to go away. Keep it up!

      Merry Christmas!

haha , thats a great list there. It takes time to start building your list and just like any thing else on a blog , it takes time to build a good responsive list.

  4. Hey Enstine,
A very nice blog you have here. I followed you via Adrienne’s blog and i like what you’re doing here man, keep it up.

Email marketing just like Adrienne said above is never an easy thing, neither is it a rocket science. And every new marketer starting just starting out exprienced those mistakes you mentioned here expecially learning how to craft an eye catching headline and how to engage with your lists.
But i believe that anyone can learn it ones you give it more attention.

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Sending messages too often is a terrible mistake that many Facebook marketers do. They simply make users click “unsubsribe”.

    Hi Enstine,

The most beneficial is engagement in my experience. I have trouble in building a list since my blog present in two languages. But, engagement (in any means) help a lot to build that list for sure. For example, I emphasize more on building list through my facebook fanpage. It works and give me some more ideas to develop my blog further

Basically, providing no value whatsoever is the biggest mistake. It’s like you have passed step one of getting someone to fill out your email opt-in, but what you do with it is vital. It’s best to over deliver, but offer a free ebook. After they sign up offer another bonus ebook as well. I go with the 80/20 rule and sometime more like 90/10 rule. If they like what you say and trust your content they will buy :)

  8. I don’t like those emails that sound desperate right off the bat and they keep sending them more than 1x weekly. I find them annoying. I haven’t done any for my blog yet but I do for a few retail sites and I try not to overdue them. (1x monthly is the usual) . Subject line is key and sometimes hard to get down pat. It takes some time and testing too. Thanks for the tidbets on this subject!

I think another one to remember is the aspect of ‘personality’. Your goal with an email list is really to build an intimate relationship with your subscribers. Let them think of you as a friend, not a salesman.

  10. The subject line is so key.

Without a good subject line the message will not get read. So what if you have a fantastic message, or special, or free book. If they do not read it, it does not exist.

  11. That’s very true what you write. List building became a little more complicated those days but we also have better tools to have control over our work.

  12. Thanks Enstine, would it be possible in your next post to give a few examples of incentive to offer, and catch phrases to use. Email Marketing stinks I could use some pointers.

Well said. These were the exact reason when a email goes fail. Email marketing or the list building is on in our hands on how creative and attracting it is.

We need to attract our reader by the way the email looks.
