Obviously, with the update in 2012 known as the Penguin update internet marketers, SEO’s, small online businesses are all scurrying to see why they have lost their rankings on Google. Time and time again I troll the forums to find out what problems people are having. More often than not they are getting duped with exact anchor text.
So what does this mean? Should you completely redo your website or start over from square one? No, not by any means, because starting a new website means your starting on a domain that isn’t aged and you will have to let it be for quite sometime before you see any results in Google.
Mix Up Your Anchored Text – Links Need To Be Natural
Upon, looking over your backlink profile you need to make sure you make it look as natural as possible. This could mean anything from putting your url, variations of your keywords, some “click here”, “more information”, ect. The focus needs to be how people would naturally link to your website or blog. I can’t stress this point enough!
So let’s say you have a site that had number one rankings for your keywords but nearly 90% of you keywords were exact anchors. The solution is going to be every link you build needs to NOT be your anchor text. You want to dilute that number down to 20-30% exact anchors. Mix up the anchors not all the same anchors because this looks odd! This is a conservative approach, but a tried and tested method that actually works.
So if you have a ton of exact anchors then you’re going to have to work harder and harder in order to get your backlink profile back in order. Now only a fool would try to dilute this in a day or week and sit back and wait for their rankings to return. This looks unnatural to Google and link velocity is a key factor.
NB: 3 Reliable Sources Of Free Website Traffic
Link Velocity – Don’t Forget About It
As a general rule of thumb, you need to keep it slow and constant. Meaning if you do 5 blog comments a week and two guest post (and any other methods) make sure you keep a slow and steady amount of links coming to your site. Google will take note and over time your rankings will slowly start to climb back up to the first page of Google.
It’s been said that the turtle wins the race verses the rabbit because he takes the approach of pacing himself, rather than rushing very quickly and expending all his energy. The same can be said about Google and SEO; slow and steady wins the race. Lot’s of internet marketers look for results quickly, which really isn’t going to happen unless you do something 100% blackhat.
Quality of Links
This is another major concern you need to strongly consider when building links. Don’t make the mistake of using crappy fiverr.com links, profile links, paid links, or any other low value linking methods you can think of. Believe it or not 1 quality authority link can beat 2,000 crappy links. I have tried and tested this over the years. Focus on quality and if your hiring a SEO company to do your SEO make sure they are not taking any shortcuts and blasting your site to ugly sites.

My idea is that exact anchor text is something of the past, gone of the days where people would buy 1,000s of links with each match anchor text to rank.

You need to be smart about your link profile, you need to diversify your link building strategies.

I agree with you that slow and steady win the race, its too bad that lots of people like going through the short cuts of getting links these days which is very un-advisable.
I hope they will be able to come and read this as well.

I agree with you totally. In these days of Google war against spammy links and the rest, trying to build backlinks using exact match keyword phrases is a wrong approach to link building. A natural approach will be to use different anchor texts at every time. thanks for sharing.
Yeah I guess that it’s a good thing in order to keep too much spam out of the search engines, so overall the it’s great. I just hate the fact that I actually have to do something now
The update that killed the absolute match domains also pretty much destroyed Niche sites as a business model

Rasmus recently posted..Thoughts of the Frustrated Blogger
“Hate to do something new?” Does it mean you weren’t doing this before now? Well, actually Google did not introduce anything new. It only succeeded in fine-tuning its echnology to catch up with what black hat SEOs were doing. So, we shouldn’t fret over the updates.
Btw. EDM(exact domain match) update really did not destroy niche sites as a business model. I recently started a niche blog which is really an exact match domain and I can say that right now, with just about 8 articles published on that site, it is already driving traffic from the search engines and with very good rankings for that matter!
I truly believe that what Google tried to discourage about the exact domain match update is one-page sites that wants to use the power of domain relevancy to get high rankings. If your exact domain match sites is constantly being updated with relevant content, Google will definitely give you the ranking you deserve.

I have almost stopped using SEO anchor texts; I just go with the flow. Using keywords, especially if they’re long tail will surely give a spammy look to the link. And for sure, search engines don’t like them as well! So why use them. Keeping it natural works great.

SEO is facing lot of change on day by day. I don’t understand what I do to get good ranking on SERP. I’m little confuse
Hi Siya
I think a lot of people are confused. SEO used to be simple to explain. Do your on page SEO (titles, url and keyword density) and just build links.
Now we cannot just build links but must focus on high quality links (hard to get) and remember to vary the the anchor text. Basically we now have the term “over optimized” that Google uses when your site (and links pointing to it) has the anchor text too many times.

Before most SEO specialists agreed that there was really not a term such as “too many links”. Now they are discussing if poor links and over-optimization can actually hurt your site (and you can thereby also hurt your competitor negative by building spammy links to their site).

Great topic Rasmus. Yes, after Google announced this new update, according to which, they are removing the sites from their search index, which buys links to get ranked higher rankings on the SERPs. But, we can easily pass this update, by giving away relevant backlinks from appropriate anchor texts. For example, if you are writing a paid post about digital displays, then you may insert an anchor text – “find best digital displays” with linking to the sponsor’s site, and the post should be about digital displays too. That will certainly do it, and help you pass over this new link algorithm update.

Great advice, Enstine – I’ve also read elsewhere that textual links need to be as natural as possible and that where backlinks are concerned it’s quality not quantity that counts.
At the end of the day, I think this is a good thing because it means it’s the really good stuff that should end up on page one, rather than rubbish sites with a ton of carefully constructed links and strategically placed keywords.
