My 5 Year Experience With Hostgator!

I have been hosting with Hostgator (HG) since 2008. My story with this well-known top web hosting institution is what I want to share with you in this post.

Before Hostgator, My very first attempt at hosting a website was with UCVHOST, an Indian based web hosting company that fed me with buckets of unresolved recurring technical breakdowns. Well, I guess that was in their early days. If they are still in business today, I want to think they have gone through recruiting more qualified staffs.

One of the web hosts I tried my hands on was 1&1. I hosted a couple of websites and registered over 300 domain names with them. My major concern with 1&1 is customer service and very heavy-to-load customized webmail and control panel. After going through several other hosts that I cannot mention here, 1and1 was the last step before Hostgator.

NB: If you are offering any product/service and your customer service is below tolerance, then you are out for a loss.

Since moving my sites to Hostgator in 2008, I have had to grow my business big time. I moved on to buying a re-seller account which I later on upgraded to a dedicated server for my local webhosting business.

It’s been with ease the management of my re-seller account, dedicated server and shared accounts. I know these are some common features found almost with any good web host. However, a few factors make Hostgator stand out:

Server stability and up-time

These are some of the factors you should pay close attention to when looking for a satisfying web host. Your online business, blog or e-commerce shop is crucial that you won’t want to trust it in the wrong hands.

My clients (hosted on the re-seller account and dedicated server) have had satisfaction throughout. My numerous sites on the shared accounts have never had 1 hour or more downtime. None of the sites in my control have ever had any prolonged slowness.

I think Hostgator server stability and up -time have won my trust.

Customer service

Now, this is one element in business that carries a lot of importance. I like the experience with Hostgator. There are three things that keep me satisfied with their customer service:

  1. Rapidity with which an issue is resolved. The live chat is an excellent tool. I often don’t send mails to their support department. Some little issues that arise are often resolved almost instantly on chat.
  2. Support staff qualification: I think Hostgator has got a plus on recruiting qualified support staff. In some cases, (else where) you’ll find your case escalated from one support staff to the other. You may end up not having a solution. With HG, I have often gotten my issues resolved by not more than 1 support staff.
  3. Coming from a different host? That’s still not a problem with Hostgator. They have a completely free migration service. I have had many sites moved from other hosts to them freely. This is a service charged by some other hosts. HG does it quick and helps you manage the whole process with no down time.

Does it mean I have not had any problems for the past 5 years with HG ?

There is no way you can think there is never been problems. The difference comes in how the problems are handled. I have had some little issues but how soon these get solved makes me think they are not really a concern.

Most often, some of these problems, like the famous 500 Internal Server Error are not tied to HG alone. The 500 Internal Server Error is a common issue on most shared servers as a result of over usage of shared resources.

Nevertheless …

One of the things that attracted me to HG in the very beginning was the free $100 Google Adword Code they offer. They have not specifically told us that this code is tied to some specific countries (US,Canada) so I got somehow embarrassed when I was unable to use it from my country. Well, does that really count as a point against them?

Summary

My 5 year satisfaction level with this top web host can be rated at over 95% given the number of accounts and sites that I have hosted with them. Based on my experience and satisfaction, I can quickly recommend them as one of the best web host we have today. For WordPress bloggers, look no further.

  1. Agree. Hostgaotr is pretty good provider. But. i can’t agree that it гшы the best. I can actually hardly tell who is the best from this area. I aslo was hosting my sites with Hostgator for about 3 years or so and first 1 неуфк everything was great but then i was just following the stream..

    Hi Enstine,

I ditto your words here :)

I too have been using Hostgator for years now, and it surely works wonders for my blog too. Yes, there are always some ups and downs but those happen all over. What matters most in such cases is how the support system is, and in the case of Hostgator, they are always there to resolve issues within no time.

Yes, I like the offers they keep coming up with, which is like an icing to the cake. However, I’ve been hearing people talk a lot about Bluehost too, though never felt the need to try it, but those who have say it’s another good service. I guess I’m just happy with this one :)

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead :)

Enstine, I love their 24/7 tech support on chat. I’ve used it often and they have been awesome. I love going direct w/them. I’ve had to call too for a client and they were excellent via phone too. I had gone thru re-seller in beginning but it was hard since they were in different time zone. I would highly recommend them to anyone. A few techs even helped out on coding which others say they cannot.
I had to contact GoDaddy once for moving domain name and they were quite slow on getting back to me.

  8. Thanks for sharing this info. about hostgator. I use godaddy, but know a couple of others that have used it and have helped them set up their blogs. The one thing that I liked about setting it up is that it was a little more user-friendly compared to godaddy. Other than that, I believe that both hostgator and godaddy have great customer service. I know on godaddy’s part, they helped me get out of jams each time I called.

Good intel Enstine, I did contract some Indian designers when starting up ojmart.co.uk and they did a bad job, however some great Indians did the job better than expected. I had issues setting up with HostGator but after sending them an email, they responded rapidly and gave me proper set ups on how to get my site hosted. Thanks

  17. Hi Enstine,
You got this review on time and the presentation is excellent first I want to congratulate you for this post. I want to share in here my experience with HG:-

I moved from one of a prominent hosting name to Hostgator recently and the service provided by HG is awesome till now. The outage due to over utilization of resources is zero in HG as compared to my previous experience. And ofcourse they have a fantastic Customer service in the initial days of moving in HG once I went accidentally to US Support staff and after understanding my concern he got to know my query is meant for India support to look at he transfered the chat agent based in India and without me singing the whole song again agent fixed my issue right away. The chat support is such an excellence why to use phone or any other medium. :)
Prompt and Superfast service experience, thanks HG and remain As is.

    Cheers,

  18. I am currently using a blogger blog, but as soon as I move on to WordPress, I will use your code to buy from them. I might do it this month :)

    Hi Enstine,

I have used Hostgator for about there years. I have never used another company. I didn’t feel any need to do so. Hostgator works well and I’m not using a reseller account.
Most of the time (99.99%) the server was up and my sites were accessible. It is fast and reliable.
Durign these three years I experienced only one major problems when a hacker uploaded malicious script on my account. I emailed hostgator and the problem was solved in maximum 24 hours.

What else can I say? They are fast, easy to work with, safe and with a good customer service.
I heard a lot of scary things about other companies that let their servers fall and their clients wait for days and days. Never heard something alike with Hostgator. Very good company.

OK. You are very close to your 100th post on this blog. I want to congratulate you in advance. 100 posts on a blog (written by you) is a great milestone. I’m still fighting to write my 50th post.

    Hey Enstine,

I’m not sure how I should comment on this because I had a horrible experience with Hostgator. I know, this stuff does happen.

As you know, my main hosting is with Bluehost which I’ve been with them since 2008 as well. Back in 2009 I joined a program that had to do with blogging and affiliate sites. We had to use their program but they wouldn’t let us host our blogs with any other service other then Hostgator. I wasn’t too happy about that but I spent a lot of money on that course so I signed up with them.

I uploaded my blog, which we all know how darn easy that is right! Well, I went to the dashboard to log-in and it wouldn’t let me. It would shoot me back to a blank page so I called Hostgator. The service tech had no idea why this was happening so he checked some things out, I was able to log-in and I went about my work.

The next day the same thing happened and the day after that and the day after that. I ended up speaking with a supervisor and they couldn’t figure it out either. This went on for two solid weeks and they couldn’t explain to me why I couldn’t log into my own blog.

I finally said to heck with it because here I was having to create a bunch of blogs and I couldn’t log into any of them.

Had it been an okay service I may have switched over because I really didn’t want to be paying for two hosting accounts but since Hostgator made that an easy choice for me I got refunded on the product and the hosting service so they were at least apologetic and helpful with me moving on.

Maybe that was just a sign that I didn’t need to be doing that program which is why I had all those issues. We all know how simple it is to create a blog and log-in. Something else was going on which is why no one at Hostgator could explain that either. I laugh about it now!

I’m not surprised that once there are issues that go above the skills. I can’t say what went wrong either. 2 weeks was enough time to start killing business ;) so I guess you had no option

However, how often this happens to other clients is a pointing factor to quality of service. Despite that desperate experience, I think they are still up to the now challenges.

Good to hear from you this week again ;)

      Hi Adrienne,

This sounds to me like a mystical experience. I’m sure leaving Hostgator was a good thing. However, it seems it was not their fault. The evil was not with Hostgator but, probably, with that company who forced you to sign up with Hostgator. Did you succeed with that blogging + affiliate course?

Strange things happen on heaven and earth.

        Well Silviu,

Well, Hostgator was the one that wouldn’t allow me to log into my own blog so not exactly sure who’s fault that could have been but theirs.

The company just offered the program that I was using at that time but the blog was WordPress and installed through Hostgator. I guess you didn’t fully read my comment where I said I got my money back from both of them and just moved on.

          Hi Adrienne,

I read the whole comment but somehow missed the point: “I got refunded on the product and the hosting service”. OK. I think it was something that was very bad for you. Somehow taking that course was a bad thing and probably a higher force from above blocked you from both lines of action: Hostgator and that product.
I really believe it was for your own good.

Yup, Hostgator is great all around. Are they the very best of the best? I don’t know, but after a few years of having a few sites hosted by them I have no complaints. The customer service availability is definitely the most important part in my opinion. Problems are bound to happen with anything sooner or later. Being able to reach someone and then have them actually fix your problem it great.

  23. Aris Tchoukoualeu CAD says:

I hosted one of my web site with Cistexhosting. I was a novice those days, and was just looking for something cheap. but today I can say that the customer service is cool there, it is a small host, but good customer service.
then lately for a new project, I went on GoDaddy. huge mess, my web site was down, I didn even know where or how to contact them. Since I could not use their phone system, I was left on my own, just to pray for the system to start working again and for my site to work well again.
I definetly need to try Hostgator
    thanks for the post

My experience has also been great with Hostgator. I am using Hostgator’s hosting package since last 3 month as I was having many problems with my previous host Netfirms. Though their customer support was great but hosting package was useless if your website attracts significant amount of traffic. My website was getting down 5/10 times a day and so do the traffic in my website. Then I moved up to Hostgator’s dedicated hosting & I am more than happy with its service, however they too have irritated me at start for 4/5 days saying that we are uploading your database but since that I haven’t had any problem with their hosting. I saw a significant rise in my website’s traffic, I am getting approximately two times the traffic I was getting with Netfirms Hosting. Thank you for sharing your views about hostgator’s hosting Pal.
