The Two Secrets For Growing your Business Through Social Media

A lot of people believe that if you spam your business links through out Facebook and Twitter, it will grow your business. That is the farthest thing from the truth. In fact if you do that, you will end up angering your fans in your networks and they will not want anything to do with you.

There are only really two things you need to do in order to grow your business through social media. It has nothing to do with pestering your fans and followers to buy your products or services.

1. Spread Your Influence

The first thing you must do is to learn how to become influential in your niche. What is it about your business that you are truly passionate in? Once you find it, you need to stick with that, and share interesting facts about your niche through your networks. I am talking about compelling information that is relevant to your niche, and be consistent with it. You must also get a blog and blog about something to do with your niche at least once a week and share it on your networks. Create a podcast as well, and a YouTube or Vimeo channel. Just go out there and educate what you can about anything to do with your niche. People are interested in learning, and if they value what you have to say and come for more updates from you, they will be attracted to you and eventually they can be ideal clients/customers.

2. Build Your Tribe

The second thing you must do is to build your network or tribe. This is extremely important and you can easily do this once you have positioned yourself as the “go-to” person in your niche, or even while you are in the process of it. Just remember, if you are sharing your great content out there, that is great however you need to be social! You will never get anywhere if everything is “one sided”. Therefore, if you end up with a new friend on Facebook or LinkedIn, welcome that new connection. That alone opens doors for a new relationship.

And you also must interact with your new fans and followers. You must not only talk to them if they say something to you. However, show interest in them, meaning converse with them over something they have shared on their networks. This way, they will respect you even more. They will be even more interested in what you offer. Put yourself in their shoes and never share anything on your networks that can easily offend people like anything that you would not discuss at the dinner table (religion, politics, sexuality and even jokes that could easily offend people). Do not complain or share any kind of negativity. Be uplifting, be inspiring, be interesting- and be social.

This is how you will not only grow your networks however, think about those in your networks thinking of you as the “go-to” person- and think about how many of their friends they could possibly refer over to you! That is how you grow business through social media.

It is not an overnight process, however if you are consistent then you will in the end be very successful with it.

Hi Miriam, and welcome to Enstine’s blog,

I totally agree with you. If you are writing helpful or evergreen content, and you are passionate about it, your work is bound to be recognized and your business sure to grow, though it does take time.

There are much better and easier ways of growing your business through the social media other than spamming or just leaving your links on the various platforms and thinking that the work will be done, something that I see so many people do.

Agreed, most bloggers might not have the time or patience to do otherwise, but Rome was certainly not made in a day, and it DOES take a lot of effort and hard work to get out there, be everywhere, have a social presence, interact with people, and lastly build those connections and your tribe. But those communities once made are sure to stay because you have worked hard for it and those relationships are made beyond your blogs. There is NO other thing or way that works better than that.

I’ve been seeing some probloggers who have started changing their ways and interacting and connecting more nowadays, which is a wonderful change indeed. I guess anything for the better is always welcomed.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice weekend, both of you :)

Probably, the most important part of your post, IMHO is “it doesn’t happen overnight”.
That is the most crucial part of my efforts. I remind myself every day, that if I don’t see the results immediately, I shouldn’t get discouraged, but keep promoting, creating, becoming.
    A good read !

    Hi Miriam,

“You need to be social.” I am sorry but I have to disagree with you. Being social and being present on social networks is a fashion, a present trend. Social networks were not so trendy 3-4 years ago. Definitely “they” will not be trendy in just 3-4 years.

WOW! Mankind is huge. Billions of people. Human types are extremely diverse. You simply cannot force them into a kind of “shirt” that was designed for a specific type of people: people with social skills.

Not everybody is social. Not everybody has social skills. On the contrary. There are so many people, valuable people without these skills. Some of them are great scientist, doctors, researchers, inventors, experts in many fields. They are very good, exceptionally good at what they are doing but they suck horribly at social skills.
What should we do with those people who hate being social? Block them, imprison them, let them die?

I have read a book some time ago about two surgeons. One of them had incredible social skills. He was present at all meetings, conferences , parties, social events etc. Everybody loved him. However, his training was not extraordinary. Social activities consumed most of his time. He had little time for study, little time for practice so he was able to perform only simple surgical operations.

The other surgeon was a total mess from social point of view. He hated being social. He hated parties, social events, discourses, meetings etc. He used most of his time training, learning, studying, practicing. As a result he was able to perform the most complex, difficult and dangerous surgical operations. He was able to save lives.
So, when people had real problems, when their lives were in danger, they always chose the bad anti-social doctor and not the good social doctor. Because they knew what is good for them.
So, one of them was “social proof”. The other was “value”. Which one to chose? For me it is not difficult at all.

Look for value, create value, become value, real value that can help people and don’t be so keen on social proof. Social proof is nothing. It can be bought. Value is everything.

    Have a nice day

  7. Miriam, thanks for this awesome post. growing one’s business through social media takes some steps and time to accomplish. Sometimes we think that the moment you have some content to share everyone would embrace it. people are suspicious most of the time. Everyone who visits the social media is to an extent selfish. So it takes extra job of reaching out and making people trust you before your product would be accepted.

The best way I feel this should be done is to build your tribe like you rightly said. Building your tribe does not start in isolation; sometimes you need to first belong to an existing tribe and create a positive impact from within. Then you would have left some positive impressions on the minds of members. From there you can graduate to expand on your own tribe through which you make more impact and grow your business.

  10. Dear Miriam,
about building that tribe, I’ve been baffled on how to get “fans” and “followers” for my business pages on social sites in the first place.
I find it very difficult to see how someone other than my competitors would be
interested in anything at all about the latest web design updates or our previous work.

I know this is probably the strongest ranking factor with online search there is….
but unless you sell a product or own a food joint, how can you create hype about a service other than giving it a ridiculously insane price with a major discount package deal which screams “I’m desperate”.

    Many thanks and Best Regards.

A very nicely written & informative post Miriam. Spreading your link every where doesn’t mean you will end up on a winning side. By doing this, sometimes you loose some of the potential customer as he/she might treat you as a spammer. Building a network is a very good thing to grow up your business as you will get some new connection over there if you deal the situation perfectly & connect to the follower in an effective manner.
