Making Money Blogging Starts with a Great Domain Name

So you’ve decided to start out on a new blogging escapade, huh?  You’ve chosen a topic, you’ve researched the keywords, and now you’re ready to select an awesome, traffic driving domain name.  But, did you know that the difference between making money blogging and losing money blogging can also be the difference between a great domain name and a lousy one?  As a result, it is vitally important that you select the right domain name straight from the start, as it will become your brand and your life for the foreseeable future.

Therefore, I would like to present you with 5 simple tips for selecting the best domain name for your new blog.

1. Select a domain name that signifies your content

This one should be a no brainer, right?  Pick a name that tells your readers who you are, what you represent, and what you write about.  Your blog name should make it easy for potential site visitors to ascertain what your content is and what you write about.  There should be no guessing involved.  For example, the domain name of this blog – EM Fast Income – leaves no doubt that this is a blog about making money.  The same should be true for your blog as well.

2. Select a domain name that is brandable and recognizable

make money blogging

There’s a lot of wiggle room when it comes to selecting an awesome blog name, but make sure you meet at least a few necessary conditions –the most important being readability.  There is no need to get all fancy here.  You want something that is easy to say and share.  You want people talking about your blog, so why make it harder on them than it has to be.  Plus, you want to ensure that the domain name you choose also has associated social media handles available as well.  There is no need to select a domain name called “The Make Money Blog” if the same name is not also available on Twitter, Facebook, and the like.  The best way to make money blogging is to be recognizable on all platforms and the best way to do that is to make sure you use the same name everywhere.

3. Select a domain name that is keyword-rich

Making money blogging involves more than marketing and content-writing know-how.  You also have to take advantage of proper SEO techniques and strategies.  This involves choosing the right keywords to include in your domain name.  Again, this points to clarity and recognizability on the part of your readers.  Blog Engage is a good example of this technique.  It’s obvious from the domain name that Blog Engage is a place to engage with bloggers.  Easy enough, right?

4. Select a domain name that is simple

There is no need to get all lengthy here.  The key is to follow the K.I.S.S. principle – Keep It Short and Simple.  Short, easy to remember domain names will make your blog memorable and shareable.  It’s really as simple as that.  A good example of this principle is my WordPress content curation site – WPBig.com – short and easy to remember.

5. Select a domain name that is recognizable

In order to make money blogging, you have to think of your blog as more than a blog.  It really is a brand that you are trying to build.  Therefore, you want to pick a domain name that is easy to recognize and that people will remember easily.  Readers will be more likely to come back if they can remember the name of your blog, right?  Ileane’s BasicBlogTips comes to mind when thinking about a name that is both recognizable and easy to remember.

Selecting the right domain name for your new blog shouldn’t be a hassle or a chore.  Follow these 5 simple tips for selecting a domain name and you will be on top of the blogging world in no time!

I think domain name would not matter much if you want a personal blog but if you want to use it for your business then it does matter. Though I think those keyword-rich domains and those with competitive keywords in them are more costly than the usual. I wish I had read this post before I purchase my domain but I will surely remember these tips if I decided on getting another one.

    • Hi Rose, glad you found some useful information. You may be right about personal blogs not needing a particular domain name. Thanks for adding to the discussion and have a great day!

    • hi Rose

Personal blogs are awesome for personal branding. You create them not to randomly share about you and your passion, or whatever it is you do on a regular/daily basis, but to express your knowledge and show case studies of people whom you’ve worked with and helped…

Personal blogs are awesome traffic generators to business blogs… does it make sense?

  2. Hi Tom,

Totally agree with your views regarding domain name selection before starting fresh blog or carrier in blogging.
You have made good point about having domain that is readable and easy to remmember.
I just want to add one more thing, domain name should be like when people speak it or pronounce it, the flow shouldn’t be broken.

Rest all are great tips from you. :-)

  3. I think the domain isn’t that important at all, you just need a catchy domain name and your alright. Fact is, you can rank faster a EMD domain, but if it’s too long, people will not remember the domain name, I always opt for a short catchy domain name.

    Just my opinion.

    Hey Tom,

Most valuable suggestions for choosing a RIGHT domain name ;)

Keyword rich domain names are best for easy ranking but we have to be more careful with them. Low quality content blog easily get hit by EMD penalties. EMD with quality content – no doubt, gets best rankings :)

  5. Jamieson, thanks for this great post. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get a domain name that is simple and yet follow the keyword rule at the moment. Domain flippers have hoarded most of the simple names and anyone going for a simple domain is either going to coin a name that is simple but is not keyword rich or have a keyword rich domain that is unnecessarily long.

Recently, I went searching for two word or three word domain names and to my surprise, hard as I tried, I just couldn’t lay my hands on any – they have all been taken.

.com domains are particularly competitive and the only thing some bloggers have resorted to is to use country related domain names like .in, .ng, .us, .au, etc which in most cases are really not too appealing.

  7. Well hey there Tom, great to see you here at Enstine’s blog. What a great topic too!

Domain names, how hard it can be at times finding the right one. So many good ones are taken already and when you’re venturing into a particular niche you definitely want one that is keyword rich to your niche! Oh hey, that rhymed. lol…

Great tips though, thanks for sharing and I hope you both have a wonderful week.

    • Hello Adrienne, thank you so much for the kind words! I agree with you about how hard it is to find a really good, keyword-rich domain name anymore. That’s probably why domain name hacks are on the rise. Country TLDs like .us, .es, .to, etc. can make for some pretty neat domain names as well. Have a great day!

    • Right!

I always advise my affiliate students to register EMD (exact match domains) when possible… I mean, I own 300+ aged domain names/niche sites myself and most of them are EMD, which Google still ranks high nowadays

Everything I affirm has been personally tested by myself, and other SEO specialists who are not talking from books

      Hope it makes sense…

numeric value should not be there in Domain name like tips4pc.com.
In this domain name, when you tell your friends about this domain name, there will be confusion that it is 4 or for. So we should avoid numeric value in domain.
Apart from that you have mention every points very clearly.
    Thanks for review.

You are very right in your advice, it is much harder to build an audience for sites with a number in the name, unless of course, you have a big name brand that is already known for it’s “number name.” Glad you liked the post and thanks for adding additional tips and insight here. Have a great day!

    Hello Tom
I think Keyword rich domain name is the best way to start a blog, however we should make the domain name as compact as possible to make it look like a brand rather then going for a big domain name which has a meaning but doesn’t look like a brand to go for. It does take some time to find a good domain name but that is the best way to move ahead. I still remember the news when Facebook had paid $8.5 Million to a company for the domain name fb.com. This reflects how important is it to find a great domain name to show your content to the people in easiest way possible. Thank you for sharing your views mate.

  10. Finding a good domain can sometimes be one of the hardest parts of getting a website online, haha! On some sites of mine, I’ve spent hours (along with a few friends) just trying to think of an acceptable name.

In my opinion, the most important aspect of a good domain is how easy it is to remember. If it’s easy to remember, you’ll get far more returning visitors.

  12. I couldn’t agree more with the said reasons of why a domain name can make or break your website.

In business, it’s more or less about what’s easy, convenient, helpful for your customers. If in the first place, they can’t even remember your domain name, can’t connect it with the kind of content you have, you are in big trouble.

Nice article, Tom! This has been shared on the IM social networking site, Kingged.com because of its helpful content. :)

    Hi Tom,

I think the most important thing is choosing a dot net or dot com part. Names are okay but it doesn’t weigh that much of a value right now. However, if you can find a good domain name, grab it. Exact match domains or domain names which are very close to your niche is a great thing especially when it comes to SEO ;-)

Out of curiosity, do you think the keyword-richness of a domain name is really beneficial. My own blogging site which I’ve just got going on is definitely keyword-rich, but I’ve just seen a few other blog posts that suggest google ranking does not really consider keyword domain titles. I personally think it is more about the brand, but where do you stand on this?

  15. Well, I have to learn internet marketing first. I will be setting up a blogger sooner or later, I’m looking for a hot niche currently.
Thanks to everyone that took their time posting.

    Hi Tom,

I think you are right when you say : you have to start with a great domain name.
Even more: the content of your site must reflect the the domain name. Also agree.

The only thing I can say is that when you begin, it is not easy to find the right domain for you straight from the start. For many people this is not the way. As far as I can see, the process is the following.

You begin with something: choose a niche, find a domain name and start to create content and promote it. After 5-6 months, sometimes more, after the blog owner learns the ropes (blogging, SEO, social media, engaging people etc.), he or she finds what he really likes and want. This is the moment when you create a new site with a new domain and this time you will select a great one (according to the rules you mentioned) and the content will reflect it.

    Have a nice day

  19. Domain name is very important for better traffic, better ranking and for good impression on the eyes of Google. Google appreciate those domain names which are related to contents. very nice article for all bloggers who are going to start new blogs by purchasing domains.

  20. Domain name and title the same will help with your keywords for blogging.

  21. The domain name has a meaning that is very important especially when using EMD domain, this will help improve our rankings in the search engines but also have to be careful because the domain name with keyword rich become one of the targets of the penguin google in value if the quality is not good
